At the state budgetary session in 2006, the Florida State legislature passed, and the Governor signed, an appropriations request that will allow a statewide expansion of the Geomatics program. Our commitment is to implement this expansion as rapidly and effectively as possible to meet the State’s pressing demands for Licensed Professionals in Geomatics. Through our distance education initiative we aim to:

·   Increase the number of BS graduates in Geomatics from 15 to 80 annually by establishing new BS degree programs at IFAS Research and Education Centers in Ft. Lauderdale (FLREC) and Plant City (Gulf Coast REC);

·   Provide undergraduate distance education courses statewide, nationally and internationally and a UF “Certificate in Geomatics” for students at other colleges and universities;

·   Work with FSMS to meet the Continuing Education needs in the State;

·   Develop a statewide MS program that allows place-bound professionals to obtain a Masters degree from many locations.

In May 2007, two new faculty members were hired at the Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center and the Gulf Coast Research and Education Center. In August 2007, the Geomatics BS degree programs at those two locations began to offer classes to their first cohort of students. Undergraduate students finishing at any community college will be able to choose Gainesville, Ft. Lauderdale or Plant City as the location to get their UF BS degree in Geomatics. Many of the courses currently being offered at the Gainesville campus via live classroom delivery will become available via UF’s elearning portal.
