Courses: SUR 3393 and SUR 3393L Geographic Information Systems (must be taken together)

 

SUR 3393 Geographic Information Systems  Credits: 2.

Course Description:  GIS concepts, surveying and mapping inputs in GIS development, comparison of GIS systems, and applications in the natural and physical sciences, engineering and planning.

SUR 3393L Geographic Information Systems Laboratory  Credits: 1; Coreq: SUR 3393.

Course Description: Geographic information systems, image processing, remote sensing and digitizing.

  
Prerequisite: None     Software Requirement: none, just high speed Internet access.  

Course Features:  Students will buy a textbook from ESRI which will include a 6-month student license to ArcGIS 9.2 (included on CD's in the book).  The book will have 9 laboratory exercises including the required datasets.   Students will watch lectures over WebCT and do the ESRI labs, uploading the resulting files over WebCT for grading.   

Registration Instructions: 

1.  You must be a registered UF student to take this class, however, there is a shorthand process for “non-degree” students.  You will be in the “0AG” student classification. (non degree in the College of Agriculture) If you plan to get the Geomatics degree, you can first take this as a non-degree student, and later have it applied to your degree program. 

2.      To register: go to http://www.cals.ufl.edu/distance/courses.html   Find the  “SUR” course listed under “courses”. For non-degree students, follow the instructions under “non-degree seeking student.” Review “critical dates and deadlines.”  Pick “Fall, 2007 semester.”   START YOUR ADMISSSTIONS AND REGISTRATION NOW TO ENSURE BEING IN THE COURSE..   Pick “application.”  Follow the instructions to complete and submit the application along with the course(s) you wish to take.. (Most of the info is to prove your Florida residency for lower tuition rates.)    After admissions/registration you will get and MUST have a “GATORLINK” ID and password for access to the ONLINE “WebCT VISTA” website for the course.   Be sure to pay your tuition fees by the deadline.   Tuition is about $320 (resident). 

To Complete The Course:

Log into the UF website for WebCT/VISTA  http://lss.at.ufl.edu using your GATORLINK ID and password.  View the video “tutorials”, review the “lecture outlines”, participate in the discussion sessions, take the progress quizzes, submit the *.dwg files for review, take the final exam.  All must be completed by the end of the Fall, 2007 term.
