SUR 4201L - Lab 8

Superelevation Shapes

OBJECTIVE

The goal of this lab is to super elevate your design for safe navigation of curves.  A standard cross-section (two 12ft lanes) will be assigned and GEOPAK will determine appropriate superelevation values and write a shape input file.  The shape file will be processed to load the data into your DGN.

STEPS

Create a new superelevation.dgn file based on the class seed file (sur4201seed.dgn).  Also place the j1oXX.inp (where XX is your initials) & job1.gpk file (from lab_6) in the same folder.

GEOPAK will create a shape file for you by using superelevation parameters for a safe road based on design speed.

Steps:

  1. Application à Geopak Road à Cross Sectionsà Superelevation Shape Manager Tools

  1. Click on the Automated Superelevation Button
  2. Put in your job number - Job # 1
  3. Speed: 50
  4. Select the 2001 English Preference file.
  5. Select a 10% e value
  6. Fill the right values under the Station Range frame.(chain, begin and end stations)
  7. Under both lanes (left and right) select the right profile (proposed)
  8. Tie: 0.00
  9. Click on the new lane icon
  10. In the left lane, enter a crown of –2, a first offset of 0, a second offset of -12 and a dependency of Independent.
  11. In the right lane, Enter a crown of  -2, a first offset of 0, a second offset of 12 and a dependency of Dependent.
  12. In the Create Input File text box type shape.

Your dialogue box after input should look as shown below

§         Once you have your dialogue box filled with the required information, Hit ApplyGenerate Superelevation Transitions. This will create the shape.inp file in your working directory.

On the Superelevation Shape Manager Tools, click on the Autoshape Builder button

§         Hit the Autoshape Input Files button to select your shape.inp file

§         Hit Draw Superelevation Shapes

§         Hit Fit View option to display your horizontal alignment with superelevation.

Your dialogue box after input should look as shown below

Zoom in on your horizontal alignment.  You should find orange and blue shapes (lanes) with superelevation parameters labeled in green.  Pan along the entire route and make sure you have continuous orange and blue lanes.

When finished, close MicroStation and backup your files (superelevation.dgn, job1.gpk, shape.inp, shape.log, j1oXX.inp, where XX is your initials).
