Basic MicroStation
Objective
The goal of this lab is to familiarize you with
basic MicroStation functions needed for this course. You will be expected to master basic
element construction and modification functions. In preparation for the alignment design, buffers
will be created around structures, wetlands and the tract boundary.
Although all of your work will take place in MicroStation,
very little will involve typical CAD drafting (as you may have done in the
AutoCAD course). The output of this course is not a finished,
presentation quality map. Rather, the course will explore the digital
design and storage of a complete route. Instead of dealing with
"lines" in a CAD package, we will be dealing with real route
elements: chains, profiles, cross-sections etc... These elements are
stored in various GEOPAK files and can be loaded and edited as needed.
You will be graded on the successful design and storage of these route
elements and not the quality of your drawing. MicroStation simply acts
as the viewer for our route
data.
MicroStation Manager

- This
dialog box allows you to open an Existing, or to make a New,
MicroStation design file.
Navigating
the MicroStation Manager Box:
- The
MicroStation Manager functions similarly to the Window's dialogue boxes
that you find elsewhere. However MicroStation Manager does several
important things above and beyond simply opening files.
- The
Type: box
determines the type of File that will appear in the File box. If you
choose Design (the primary MicroStation file), the Filter will display
*.dgn which means that only files with the .dgn suffix will be shown -
all MicroStation design files have .dgn at their end.
- MicroStation
Manager will also create a new design file. You can also use
MicroStation Manager to specify the kind of workspace and the style of
interface that you want MicroStation to create for you.
Seed
File
- MicroStation
creates new files based on templates called "Seed Files."
These design files (seed files) are the templates that MicroStation will
use to create your new design file. Select "New" from the pull
down menu "File." You will then be asked to designate a path
and a name for your new design file. (Note that the suffix for
MicroStation Design files is .DGN) Then you will want to make certain
that you have selected the appropriate seed file. For our labs, we will
be using the seed file “sur4201seed.dgn” provided on http://www.surv.ufl.edu/~sur4201l/files/index.htm
Working Units
- In MicroStation, there is always a set of
active working units comprised of a master unit and a sub unit. The
working units are used for input and output of distances and points.
- MicroStation
supports the following list of units. These are called "Standard
Units":
- Metric: Micrometer, Millimeter,
Centimeter, Meter, Kilometer.
- English: Micro Inch, Mil, Inch,
Foot, Yard, Mile.
- Units
can be changed from Settings à

Tool Bars
- We
will mostly be dealing with 5 types of tool bars. Four of them are under Tools à Attributes, Primary,
Standard & Main
- The
5th one is on the bottom left corner of the screen, which has
zoom in-out, update view……..
You can dock
the tool bars as u wish. The figure
below shows all the tool bars mentioned above.

Save Settings
- MicroStation
provides the option of auto save while working. It can be turned off from

Level
- Works
the same as “Layers” in AutoCAD.
Microsoft allows 63 levels to work on in the same file.
- Settings
à Lock à Level, locks or unlocks the
levels as required.
Element Attributes or Symbology
- To
change the level, color, weight style of an element. Can be done using the Primary Tool bar
or a dialogue box from Element à

à View Attributes, to control
the display of the attributes for an element

- Click
both (left and right) mouse buttons together to snap the point and then
click the left mouse button to accept the snap.

Reference File
- Any
.dgn file can be used as a reference file.
- As
the name suggests, the reference file is used for reference while
working on ur .dgn file
- Download
the lox.dgn file, which we will use as a reference file through
out the semester.
- To
attach a reference file, click File à

downloaded
